More about Poses
We ended up staying three nights in Poses, so had a chance for a bit of exploration. There isn't a marina there but I thought it might be helpful to give some information in a similar format to my previous post, The marinas so far, an overview (librasail.uk)
Amenities: There is no marina but you can tie up to the riverbank. We had 1.4 m of water where we moored, it shallows steeply from the general depth 6-7m in the centre of the channel behind the islands. There is a tourist office by the waterside who told us that the depth by the bank was 10m, luckily we took that with a pinch of salt.
Behind the tourist office, in the same building, are mens and ladies facilities, with a loo and a shower each. Lots of hot water, very clean and free. There were no hairdryers and I couldn't see any electric sockets in the loos.
Some of the pontoons have water and electricity but it was around 3 euros for 10 minutes water or an hour's electric so we didn't think it was worth it. To make use of these you need a token (jeton) which is probably from the Tourist Office.
Proximity: Poses is a small and picturesque town. There isn't much there but what there is is beautiful. There is a good restaurant, Auberge de Halage, on the waterfront and a creperie a little further down, very good value and delicious. A street or two back there is a brasserie (couldn't see much evidence of food on offer but a good atmosphere) and an epicerie which had tables and chairs outside. We didn't go into the epicerie so I can't give much information on this.
The nearest 'attraction' is the Barrage, next to the locks. A rather rusty footbridge takes you over a thundering series of weirs and to the other side of the river. The noise and power are quite overwhelming. Once past this fury you can watch the peniches going through the locks, hypnotic if you like that sort of thing, which I do.
On the other side of the river is a restaurant with singing and dancing but it was closed when we went past. There was a poster offering a special themed night in a couple of weeks time and we heard music from there later on so we were probably just a bit early.
A longer walk from here is to a Lidl, about 3-4 km further. It's a very pleasant walk for the most part until you get to the depressing new town where the store is situated. It's a big, brand new store with a good range of Lidl stuff. As always with Lidl stores in Europe, it's much more exciting and better quality than we get in the UK.
If you need to go further afield there is a bus, D, from the church to the next town, Val-de-Reuil where you can catch the SNCF local train service towards Vernon and Rouen (possibly other places too, I found the SNCF website hard to negotiate). If you like long walks it's around 4.5km from Poses to Val-de-Reuil railway station, partly on footpaths, partly next to main roads. It's doable if you feel keen but the bus is only 1 euro (April 2023 price) and runs every half hour.
Marina office, boatyard and staff: N/A but everyone we met was very friendly and helpful including in the tourist office and restaurants and the driver of the D bus.
Overall impression: This is an absolutely beautiful spot to spend a few days. You're woken by birdsong, the river is very tranquil, away from the main shipping lane so no wash, it's lovely and the people are great. 100% recommend.
